Of course, the ineptitude of Ray "Chocolate" Nagin and Kathleen Blanco, and their inaction in the days leading up to Katrina (despite local officials having primary responsibility for dealing with disasters), have nothing to do with the need for federal intervention after the fact. Also, why do we never hear anything about Mississippi's success in rebuilding after Katrina, parts of which were also devastated by the hurricane?

Rather than engaging in a tiresome argument about relative population densisties and the differences between saving a city that remains under water after storm passes and small towns that don't, I'll make an observation about the overall validity of your argument: Just because someone else is stupid doesn't make you smart. Just because the Mayor and Governor were inept, it doesn't make the federal response any better.

We have a right to expect better of our federal government.
