There are, I believe, commercial flights with first class seating between Detroit and Washington.

That said, I think they would have been hammered, however they got there. Flying in three private jets was probably cost-effective considering the entourage they must have had with them. It was pretty obtuse on their part as far as public relations, however.

The more significant mistake was showing up at the hearing without a plan or even coherence.

Commercial flights leave the Detroit airport several times each hour. They even have first class seating. The point is, why does a failing business maintain a private jet for the pleasure of the CEO? Why do failing investment firms schedule luxury retreats. These are not populist musings; these are valid questions relating to the bottom line.
