This is the single biggest problem I have with the government getting involved with anything. Their ideas sound great in theory, but don't work so well when actually put into practice, usually because of the unintended consequences.

As you pointed out, everyone wants fair treatment for female athletes, but now male athletes at some schools suffer because of it.

Everyone wants toys to be safe, but now charities are having to dispose of millions of dollars of goods that could be going to lower income families, all because some idiot in Washington thought they should further protect us all from eating the lead paint.

Who knows what the unintended consequences will be here? Maybe a lowering of standards to allow previously unqualified candidates into graduate school to pursue that biology degree all in the name of having a few more women around. Do we then have to worry about scientific study being performed by people who should never have been there in the first place?

The list goes on and on. Which is why I am firmly in favor of smaller, less intrusive government. The government has its greedy paws on far too much of our day-to-day lives as it is.

This is all the scarier when you consider that the Maths and Sciences in America are generally considered to be in horrific shape already... and it betrays a seriously flawed world view. It's ridiculous to think that women are being somehow kept out of these areas; the US is running something of a Math and Science major deficit right now, period.
