Watching Dick Cheney's speech today, I find myself marveling not at how he and President Bush screwed things up, but that things aren't even worse than they are.
My god; the man is totally disengaged from reality, seems utterly incapable of learning, and clearly doesn't have a clue about what it is that makes the United States the most powerful and influential nation in the world. That he was, as they say, a heartbeat away from the presidency is terrifying.
Ya, you've got to wonder why the guy doesn't just go away! I mean O'Bama is the best supporter of Cheney policies in the world.

I think you're just physically fearful of Dick Cheney. I'm pretty sure there's not a part of you or your principles that aren't overcome with your fear of Cheney. Really, that's all it is...fear. I hope you get over it.

Seriously, though, Tom, what's your bitch? Is there anything besides emotion driving it? Can you possibly elucidate what terrifies you so (four months past any conceivable scenario of that one failing heartbeat, I'll add)? Where is the disengagement from reality? I just read the whole thing, and I don't see any of this hand-flapping hooha about disengagement, or inability to learn. I think it is utterly visceral for you, and completely unsupportable by any fact. Cheney just makes you feel bad, and Obama just makes you feel good.

Just got back from travel so I haven't read or heard either speech- but didn't Cheney's policies of an ever expanding sphere of executive power bother one of you small govt advocates? Or the idea that Naval Observatory wasn't just off google earth, the VP claimed it was not under any of the 3 branches of Govt. This is radical stuff whether a neocon or socialist is pushing it.

I just can't bring myself to care much about what Dick Cheney says anymore. What I'd really like to know is how he changed from the no nonsense, low key, can-do kinda guy in the first gulf war into Mr. Potter from "Its a Wonderful Life"?
Old age it must really suck!

That post was pure emotion Tom. Not one rational point or argument made.
Of course, as reality continues to mug Obama and he adopts more and more of the Bush/Cheney policies, emotion and patting yourself on the back on your enlightenment is about all that is left.
PS: Why hasn't Obama yet to release those documents that Cheney asked him to on the results of interrogations? I thought it was all about truth and not raw politics.

Or the idea that Naval Observatory wasn't just off google earth, the VP claimed it was not under any of the 3 branches of Govt.
I don't remember that claim, but neither do I remember any point in the last 8 years where the alleged claim had anything to do with anything. I'm completely unclear on what Google Earth might or might not display has to do with anything, either. Were you looking for a landscaping job, where it might help? And no, it didn't bother me one lick, until Bush started bailing out banks. Show me one thing that Bush or Cheney did that was outside the bounds of the Executive AND was unconstitutional up to the bailouts.
Old age does suck, fish. There's really only one other option, and it's not better. But what doesn't suck is that you don't really care about what other people think, so you start speaking your mind.

Old age does suck, fish.
Concur.
There's really only one other option, and it's not better.
Quicker though.
But what doesn't suck is that you don't really care about what other people think, so you start speaking your mind.
?????
I don't understand this sentence.
I will make a declarative statement about something other than old age that clearly does suck.
Terminator Salvation

Oh yeah....the San Francisco Giants...they suck too! Which is why I had to suffer through Terminator Salvation.

Scott,
The reference to google earth distracted you. The key part of the sentence is Cheney redefining the office of the Vice President as not being subject to the rules of the Executive Branch.
Torture didn't bother you. Extraordinary rendition didn't bother you. Billions spent in Iraq and Afghanistan and all the dead Americans and civilian casualties didn't bother you. But, the government is spending your money (effectively or not, we don't know yet) to ameliorate the effects of the downturn. This bothers you. So it's the money. I give up. I engage with those who I don't necessarily agree with to learn something or to exchange ideas and information. (Sometimes, I admit I am wisecracking just for my own amusement) But if it is not about ideas or what we believe our country should be, I got nothin'. I won't/can't engage someone who only worries about their money and how undeserving people may be getting some of it. I can see it as a concern, but not an engaged citizen's only concern.
I've learned a lot, here. Frank, Pursuit, Scott and others, even Squidley, have shown me that ideas I believed were wrong. I have occasionally convinced someone else of my viewpoint. But if in the end, all that the people I am talking to care about is their money, I am going to make better use of my time.
I'm off to the Socialist Paradise that is Europe for a couple weeks, Italy and Slovenia, and I think I'll wean myself off F/A while I'm there. It's been fun, Ciao.
